Our next Athens Area SHRM meeting in 2013 will be on Tuesday February 12th at The Georgia Center. Networking will begin at 5:30pm followed by dinner and our program.

Please register by Friday February 8th so that we can have an accurate count of attendees.

Our program will be “Why Hire A Veteran?” presented by Penelope Harbour from the ESGR. The program will highlight the following topics:

- Why Hire A Veteran?  Learn about the benefits of hiring a veteran.

- USERRA Law:  Ensure your company is complying with the federal law that protects the employment and reemployment rights of service members; know the dos and don'ts.

- The Department of Defense “Hero 2 Hired Program”: Learn about the DOD Program that makes it easy to access the resumes of service members and provides you with unlimited job postings for free.

 

The presentation is pre-approved for 1.00 hours General Credit through HRCI.

 

Penelope Harbourbegan working with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) in May 2004. She is currently the Employer Support Specialist for the GA ESGR.  Ms. Harbour serves as advisor to the GA ESGR Chairman and the State Adjutant General for the ESGR Program for Georgia .  In this capacity she oversees the Georgia ESGR budget, plans and coordinates conferences, employer briefings and trains employers, Guardsmen and Reservists on the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.  She also provides resume assistance to service members and helps connect them to employers with jobs.

Ms Harbour worked for the Department of Homeland Security, Center for Domestic Preparedness, in Anniston, Alabama prior to accepting her current position.   

Ms. Harbour was a Master Sergeant in the Air Force Reserves.  She has 12 years of combined active duty and Reserve experience in Personnel and Career Advising.  She served as the Career Advisor for the 301st Operations Squadron at Carswell Joint Reserve Base in Texas; assisting approximately 400 military members in making career decisions.

She earned a Bachelors’ of Business Administration at the University of Texas at Arlington.
