Our next Athens Area SHRM Chapter will be meeting Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at the Georgia Center.  Networking will begin at 5:30pm followed by dinner and presentation.

Please register by Friday September 7, 2012 so that we can have an accurate count of attendees.

This month’s topic will be “The ‘New’ Americans with Disabilities Act: Who’s NOT Disabled??” presented by Jared Bostrom from Burnette Insurance Agency. What is the Americans with Disabilities Act and how does it impact your workplace in 2012?  What does the EEOC expect from employers when it comes to compliance with this regulation? Jared will give an overview of the ADA and its recent amendment, the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act of 2008, and cover the following topics:

  • With the ADAAA of 2008, more people are “disabled” than you might think. What is the new standard?

  • Why are job descriptions critically important in regard to compliance with the ADA?

  • How involved should your supervisors be in determining when someone is covered under the ADA, and when do you need to get Human Resources involved?

  • What is a “reasonable accommodation” and how do the terms “interactive process” and “undue hardship” relate?

  • What other laws impact how an employer handles employee requests related to illness and time away from work?
